A good iPhone application helps both the company it’s built for and the customer it targets. An even better iPhone app solves a problem that can’t easily be tackled by any other media, is elegantly designed and easy-to-use — reflecting a reoccurringly positive brand image for your audience. Overland got the opportunity to imagine, design and build such an app for the sports giant adidas’s Retail Group.

Mobile phone applications are the hottest marketing method alongside social media in today’s media landscape. We have covered both topics extensively in whitepapers available for free download on our website, here we focus on the purpose and functionality of the application we built for adidas.

Inventory in the more than 70 adidas Outlet Stores in the U.S. vary from store to store. So do special offers. So, Adidas was looking for a way to do localized, product-specific and cost effective marketing for the stores, chain-wide. Overland developed an iPhone app to solve these issues.

This is how it works:

Standard for iPhone applications: the number in the red circle in the corner of the icon indicates how many coupons are available. A touch of a finger will open the app.
The first time a user opens the application they will be asked to enter email address and zip code. An overall marketing strategy for adidas retail is to harvest emails for ongoing and targeted permission based email marketing. The zip code is what allows the application to serve up store-specific localized coupons.
The home screen for the application is the listing of available coupons and offers. The green listings can be used at any adidas outlet store. The plus sign indicates that this is a multi-use coupon. The pink listings are store-specific.

If you click to use a one-time offer the app will notify you that clicking on it will erase the offer from your phone after use at the cash register in the store.
The coupon screen is a scannable barcode. The phone screen is presented to the cashier at checkout, scanned, and the discount will be taken off your purchase.
The application contains a listing of all adidas Outlet Stores with addresses and phone numbers. If you click an address with your finger it opens the map application on your iPhone to the right spot. If you tap the phone number it dials the number.
The application also contains general information and legal language.
